Kit vs plans vs quick-build: the honest tradeoffs
Time, cost, skill, and what you actually OWN at the end — the four-way tradeoff every builder makes.
PLANS-build: cheapest entry, most fabrication skill, longest timeline. Best when the journey is the point; hardest to stay motivated.
KIT-build (matched-hole era): CNC-drilled hole patterns make the airframe self-jigging — the RV-14 has several flying in under a year. Modern kits include real finish kits and firewall-forward packages; you buy back 300–800 hours.
QUICKBUILD: factory assembles ~75% of the riveting (wings/fuselage). RV QB kits cut 800–1,000 hours at ~$25k premium. The 51% rule still applies — evidence: you must be able to show your major portion.
The honest math: builders rarely finish what they can't afford OR can't schedule. Choose the form where you can ACTUALLY hit a weekly hour target for 2–3 years.
